I’ve been lucky to inherit olive skin that tans easily without burning if I put enough sunscreen on and am mindful about my time in the sun. However, one has to be OUTSIDE in order to get a tan, and that just didn’t happen much after having Charley! Becoming a mom for the first time is magical but also the most challenging thing in the world. I was basically in survival mode for the first 6 months. I had Charley in the beginning of September, so I didn’t get much sun the following summer and oh my word I’ve never been (or at least felt!) so white!!! When this summer was rolling around I realized I better investigate sunless tanning options. I couldn’t do another pale summer! (…but seriously.) I was hesitant to try a self tanner because I associated them with orange, shimmer, and chemicals. But I was desperate.
That’s where Tanceuticals come in! Their reviews are amazing & their ingredients are surprisingly clean (if you’ve followed me for awhile, you know this is a big deal for me and something I care deeply about). They’re actually ranked the number one self tanner on selftanning.com. Their magic ingredient for giving you that bronzed glow is dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and it rates low (1-4) on the Environmental Working Group’s cosmetic safety guide, Skin Deep. I was pleasantly surprised! All the ingredients are easy to pronounce and you can’t question the safety of acai berry, cocoa seed butter, grape seed oil, mango seed butter, argan oil, sweet almond extract, aloe vera, macadamia nut oil, pomegranate extract, shea butter, and vitamin E! 😉 I mean, this could not only give me that glorious summer glow but it could actually make my skin better!!
Safety is important and you know how much it means to me, but I’m also emphatic that products need to work. So, let’s see some before and after pictures, shall we?! Keep in mind that in the before photo I had sunscreen on, so my arms and legs were glistening…not the best planning on my part!
So here’s before (focus on the legs, as my arms have gotten more sun and were already kinda tan!):
And here’s after (even though I hate my calves, I’m going to tell you guys just this one time, focus on the calves! This is where I was whitest! Now, they’re bronzed!):
I tried the Self Tanning Body Lotion and the Self Tanning Face Lotion, both in dark. At first I thought this would be too dark for me, but it wasn’t! First thing to note about this lotion – it smells so good! Smells like coconuts and doesn’t have a weird chemical smell at all. I don’t have a ton of practice applying self tanning lotion, but the mitt that I used helped a lot. My personal tips for applying it: exfoliate or dry brush before applying + be careful around the hands and feet. These are the hardest areas to make your tan look natural. Use the mitt and apply lotion to calves or arms. When most of it has been rubbed in using circular motions, take your mitt and lightly rub tops of feet and hands, carefully applying it to the toes and fingers. I had a funky line on my feet the first time I used it, so it may take some practice, but once I made these adjustments, it was much easier and more natural looking in those areas! Then I let it dry for a bit and went to sleep. You’ll wake up with a beautiful bronzed tan!
Have you ever tried self tanning lotion? What has been your experience?
