I’ve heard many moms express frustration over how difficult it can be to get ready and look cute each day. And I get it, mom-ing is hard work! Some days you don’t have the energy to do your hair or put on makeup and throwing on a pair of heels seems like the last thing you’d want to do. But sometimes I think we make it harder than it needs to be. Maybe we just need a few tricks up our sleeve to take the hard work out of it! I’m going to provide a few tips for making getting ready easier and making you feel stylish without feeling like you’re getting ready for prom!
First off, each person is different, so know yourself and what works for you.
I can start to feel pretty down if I don’t throw on some clothes and a little bit of makeup, so most days I do at least something to make myself feel more put together. I’d say 2/7 days of the week I “bum” around and don’t put on any make up or make any effort to get out of my yoga pants. Maybe your ratio is a little different and more like 4/7 days, but no matter what it is, knowing this about yourself can really help with how you approach getting ready on those other days!
Next, take the thinking out of it by having a few looks you love and make you feel comfortable but also chic. These are your foolproof outfits that you can fall back on when you can’t figure out what to wear. I find that building my wardrobe around a few basic pieces makes my wardrobe so much more flexible and it makes getting dressed so much easier and faster. Invest in basics such as great neutral booties, a couple pairs of denim (I suggest one pair of blue denim and one pair of black denim), a pair of cute sneakers, a pair of comfortable, classic pumps, a few great button downs like this plaid one & this denim one, a tunic or blouse, a classic sweater (pick one in grey, black or camel) and a great, timeless watch. The rest of your wardrobe can be less expensive and trendier, because those things are easy to switch out as seasons (and trends!) change.
Accessorize! For your fall accessories, think floppy hats (or fedoras), blanket scarves, bracelets and bangles (layer those up with your timeless watch!), and cross-body bags or totes. In the summer you can switch out the scarves & booties for jewelry & sandals. This is an easy and affordable way to personalize your look and make it feel like you!
Okay, so now you have a flexible but stylish wardrobe and you have some awesome basic pieces you can work with. Find 4-5 looks that you love and you feel comfortable in.
Making the slightest change in accessories will surprise you at how much your look changes.
I don’t plan my outfits out for the week, because what I wear depends on my mood for that day, but I do have plenty of looks to choose from that are my go-to outfits. This makes it so easy to get dressed. And I find that getting dressed is half the battle! 😉
From there, brush on a little makeup if you’re feeling it and let your mood direct you. Some days I’m really feeling the makeup, and other days I am not. Be open to whatever you are feeling that day! Don’t let makeup intimidate you. Do what feels natural to you and I promise you that you’ll be happy with the outcome.
Next, hair. Oh goodness. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve put off washing my hair. Because who has time to dry and style their hair? Especially as a mom! That’s where dry shampoo comes in. I’m sure I’m not blowing anyone’s mind with this bit of info, as dry shampoo is to #momlife what peanut butter is to jelly. But if for some reason it is news to you, well then, welcome to the good life, friend!! I wash my hair a couple times a week. I find it’s easier to wash and dry it at night after my little has gone to bed. Then I style it the next day. This helps tremendously as I don’t get burnt out on styling my hair and dry shampoo helps me extend the wash for a few days. I love to use a wand to get a bit of wave/curl in my hair. I find it is forgiving and you don’t have to spend a ton of time doing it. And if you’re on the last day or two before needing to wash your hair again, throw a hat on, girl! This is a lifesaver and I love that it instantly ups your style factor and is the quickest, easiest way to “do your hair!”
And there you have it! Now you are armed with everything you need to get dressed and ready for the day and look like the chicest mom around!
What are your tips for getting ready? What is your favorite go-to comfortable but chic outfit?! Let me know – I’m all ears!
